opus one. [not-so-flawed wednesday]

it’s a mystery.

though we tried to identify this arm, the watchband and the bracelet, we have no idea.

someone texted us this photograph – sans words – and left it at that.

granted, there are plenty of texts that arrive from political groups, fundraisers, smarmy this-is-amazon-we-are-shutting-down-your-account-give-us-all-your-information-to-save-yourself. even the occasional “hi” from a number we don’t recognize or, worse yet, inappropriately vulgar texts coming from who-knows-where. but never a bottle of wine.

apparently, this is an expensive bottle of wine. we looked it up. it ranges in price from several hundred dollahs to several thousand dollahs – neither of which we could or would spend on a single bottle at this moment.

when i had dinner shy of twenty years ago in nyc with a radio program director of the biggest adult contemporary station in the metro area he ordered a bottle of wine. he also ordered truffles flown in from france earlier that day. sharp cheeses for in-between courses. port to follow the meal. i hoped and prayed that we weren’t splitting the bill. my work was on radio, slowly gaining, but he had an expense account. the expense account that i had was from my label – which i owned. i kept every receipt and documented everything, but there is that small detail of having the money to cover the expense…

the wine he chose was $250. a merlot. i can’t remember which vineyard, what year, or what area of the world in which it was produced. i just remember the price and that it was truly a lovely glass of wine, with depth and complexity and a delightful finish. it could have been opus one.

the entire bill was nearing $800 and, though it was an experience i won’t forget, all i could think of was that we could have had big macs together and chatted the chat we chatted and he could have donated the rest to a food bank in the city. the fancy-fance was somewhat lost on me…the backpack-toting-jeans-boots-wearing scrappy yamaha artist recording in the city. when i arrived, i had walked into a chic place, a stainless bar going the length of the restaurant, exposed brick, program director on a stool in animated conversation with the bartender, and the hostess – or was she the maître d’? – asked, “would you like me to check your ….errr…. backpack?” i declined. at that moment, that errr-backpack had everything in it…my purse, my clothes, my composing notes, my plane ticket, fresh socks, my toothbrush and a travel blowdryer. i couldn’t check it.

so the other day when this photograph arrived in our textbox, we searched the area code to see if we could figure out who it might be from. no luck. and no follow-up. we wondered if it was an ad or – in a positive foreshadowing moment – a glimpse of a package to arrive. such teasing.

i suppose we won’t ever know. nothing has arrived via usps, fedex, ups. though yesterday i did get an email that said my dhl package was waiting to be delivered – if i would just supply them with all my payment information and signature.

payment information? uh-huh. if it’s for that bottle of wine – the 1999 signed opus one bordeaux red blend – i’m gonna need to pass. exquisite will have to wait. maybe until opus two.

*****

and an addendum – six months now after we got our opus one text message: greetings to you! it appears that this post is being read hundreds and hundreds of times – more than most any other post i have ever written. in the happy spirit of this continual opus one wine text circulation around the globe (for you are surely all over the world), please consider subscribing to this blog or reading some of the other posts i’ve written or purchasing some of my music on iTunes or stream it on pandora or listen on iHeart radio (it goes great with wine!) pass it on. i’d really appreciate it. truly. xo

and now – nine months later – this post has been visited a few thousand times. still a mystery.

I came across your blog while searching for an explanation for this same picture / text I’ve received twice over the last few days now. I sadly don’t have any answers but apparently it is something being sent out to a lot of people – what the goal is I don’t know! So strange. Cheers!

Ahhh….we were hoping it was the announcement of a gift that would arrive shortly. But no such luck! Lol! We haven’t figured it out yet either, but if we get any more “clues” we’ll let you know. In the meanwhile, cheers to you, too!! Clink! 🙂

Did the message had any text associated with it? Did you text back?

I just received a random text with the same picture!

I also have received it twice now, from a different number each time. A scam maybe to see who is active/will answer and believe they are talking to someone wealthy?

My husband received this text tonight and we had a fight about it. Lol I searched the picture and so happy he’s telling the truth and it’s just another scam. How awful the lengths people go to these days!!!!

Just received a text of this photo today. Did an image search and your post came up. I recommend caution as images can have code embedded in them through steganography.

Also just received an identical text with the same picture. I guess we’ll never know. Found you by looking up the picture.

Wow I literally got that earlier today second time in like 6months, first time was a Pa. Number different bottle. Today this exact pic but from Indiana was so confused so I just wanted to search it cause it look kinda catfished with the blurred pic so weird glad I’m not the only one. Still so random.

Yesterday I recieved a very similar photo text but the picture was a little different & the area code is Louisiana.. the hand has black fingernail polish & a designer bracelet (which i know bc I bought the knock off version lol).
My family is big on group chats & sometimes I get random texts from them replying to eachother so I looked at it & the table/ island behind the hand looked a bit like my uncle’s & figured it could very well be his wife’s hand plus they both love wine.
So as a courtesy I replied.
Well ‘they’ have been replying back ever since.
Here’s the exchange so far (& it will not continue on my end bc I found this thread).

Rcvd- photo of polished hand holding bottle of wine with a fancy cork stopper
    Sent- Hello, who is this?
Rcvd- I’m Linda, aren’t you Paul, Sales Director of California Opus One Wines?
Sent- Nope, wrong number. Take care Linda.
Rcvd- Sorry, maybe the assistant entered Paul’s number incorrectly. I’m so sorry to bother you, I hope I didn’t bother you.
    Sent- No worries, you didn’t.
Rcvd- Thank you for your understanding. Acquaintance is fate. I wish you and your family a safe and happy life. My name is Linda, what’s your name?
Sent- nothing (I’m not replying anymore lol)

I have gotten thousands of obvious & not so obvious spam texts & this one is the only one I thought that somebody simply had the wrong #. The fact that she stated “bother” me twice & her name again & asked for mine was a red flag & that’s what prompted me to Google it. Plus most people wouldn’t reply back more than a sorry/thank you when you tell them that they have the wrong number.

Rec’d the text over the weekend. Did not respond.

Got this text today. I told them they had the wrong number. They apologized, then a few hours later texted again saying it was fate that we met and maybe we could be friends. That made me suspicious so I google searched the image and here we are.

    • kerrisherwood11's avatar

“fate”! now that’s a new scam approach! 😏

See my reply to “Texas number” thanks for posting. Scammer also suggested to me that “we might be friends”. I laughed as I thought he was hitting on me. He stated his age as 38 and asked my age and stated he had a Manhatten NY business of importing fitness machinery. When I questioned the NC area code, he responded that he had multiple locations but “bought it there “. That’s when I knew..

I received what I think is the same pic ture yesterday. And similar msg. I too thought it may have come from someone I knew but had lost their phone number (I even thought the hand looked like hers! ) as I’d just sent put an invitation to some old colleagues/friends and joked “wine donations accepted”. However the number was a NC Area code, so I questioned the caller as to what their connection to NC was. Response was still very polite, apologetic for intrusion etc. but less coherent. That’s when i finally suspected it was a phishing scam. The persons name stated as “Lin” asking if I was “Katy” and did I receive the wine. Thought the name was clever in that it’s gender neutral so then thot the hand was perhaps from the wine store clerk. So dumb and then concerned! I froze my credit at the 3 agencies (free) and did a reverse search on the phone number. It was “likely” associated with a Jon Fernandez in Apex NC. SCAM confirmed. Reported the number to my mobile carrier who will take it from there. Lesson learned!
