trust where you’re going. [two artists tuesday]

TRUST this one.jpg

so if you are an over-thinker like me, this is tough – to trust where you’re going.  there are too many details that get in the way of the overall picture.  d is a global thinker…he looks at the bigger picture, he calls it “from 30,000 feet”.  i need to be able to envision each foot to get there….ok, maybe not EACH one, but i need a few more details lined up in order to believe something is possible.  that disparity gets us in trouble sometimes.  we talk about something and are having two different conversations within the same conversation.  mostly, we usually agree on the ultimate Thing, but getting there is, well, sometimes cloaked in a tad bit of disagreement.

who was it that said, “everything will be ok in the end.  and if it’s not ok, it’s not the end” ???  such brilliance! and optimism!  i suppose we gauge so much of what might happen on what happened Before.  we have pre-judgments about how something will turn out; we have reluctance to start; we think, “i’ve already DONE this and it didn’t work.”

i am at a crossroads.  after 15 albums, i haven’t recorded an album in 8 years, haven’t recorded a new vocal album in 16.  16!  where does the time go?  albums are very expensive projects, not only financially, but emotionally.  as i have already talked about numerous times, there is financial pressure on independent artists now like never before.  streaming and illegal downloading has lead to a literal trickle of income, despite millions of “listens”.

so – where do i go from here?  songs have been waiting; the piano beckons.  something in me resists, afraid of not recouping even what it costs at the front end for something new to be released.  part of me wants to believe – believe that it’s time to release something new, in this new time of my career.  put it out there and not be concerned with how it is received, how many cds are purchased, how many paid downloads vs how many times it is streamed or pirated.  but that won’t pay any bills, won’t afford a living.  i am having trouble seeing the 30,000 foot view.  not to mention all the feet in-between here and there.

like you, in some arena of your life, i am trying to trust.  that whatever decision i make it will be ok in the end.  and, if it’s not ok, it’s not the end.

the arnson-goodbye [k.s. friday]

hatetosaygoodbyeSONGBOX

the “arnson-goodbye” is infamous.  it is an endless loop that strays as far away from “goodbye” as possible.  on the phone, standing by the side of the car in the driveway, at the dorm room door, next to the apartment building in boston or a place in the high colorado mountains, the goodbye just goes on and on.  the conversation ebbs and swells, the tide of “the leave” determined by how long it will be till “the next time.”  i really can’t be blamed, so i hope my children are reading this.  it has been passed down through generations; we are all dna-driven to have this longgggg goodbye, this aversion to actually DO-ing it:  leaving.

yup.  i truly do hate to say goodbye.  i come by it honestly.  so, now you get my thready-ness, yes?

“beak-y” [flawed cartoon wednesday]

idonothaveabignose jpegBIG copy 2

my sweet momma had a sweet nose.  but somewhere along the line my poppo, using a derivative of her first name ‘beatrice’ nicknamed her “beak” and, for a time, all hell broke loose.  she railed against his perceived slamming of her nose (which was actually a perky little nose) and was questioning of his continued use of his (now) beloved nickname when it irritated (“irked”) her.  “beak” morphed into “beaky” – the name by which everyone under the sun knows and loves her.  eventually, she even grew to love her nickname and proudly wore a gold necklace my dad had specially made for her (no, surprisingly, “beak” necklaces are not mass-produced!)  our sweet beaky-beaky.  ohmygosh, how i miss her.

the way you move me [k.s. friday]

thewayyoumoveme Primary IMage BOX

thewayyoumoveme product BAR

june 1 – the first day of pride month.  according to the library of congress:  “the commemorative month is meant to recognize the sweeping impact that LGBT individuals, advocates and allies have on history in the U.S. and around the globe.”

as we head into this month of celebrations and parades, symposia and concerts, i am achingly hopeful for our world and our attitudes and acceptance of each other as we are.

i want my children to be in a world that is limitless, that looks for the best in each other, that allows them, and everyone else, to be in a reciprocated relationship that speaks to them, to their soul, regardless of gender.  (or race or economic status or or or…)   so when you ask them why they are in the relationship, they would each respond, “it’s the way he/she moves me.”

an acquired taste. [flawed cartoon wednesday]

have you ever been there?

i have literally sat across the restaurant table (or the kitchen table or the living room or or or) from him, on date night or any other night or morning or day, staring at his face, thinking, “geeeeeeez. you are DEFINITELY an acquired taste!”  but then, a few moments (ok, or longer) go by and love swirls around me and i like him again.

i KNOW you have been there…whether on a date or with your significant other…the times you think “whattheheck??!!??”  thank goodness that is balanced out with “you are totally my type!!!” or there would be NO relationships in the world.

i’m guessing he thinks that about me too (but only RARELY.  lol.)

i will hold you forever & ever – track 25

listening to this piece i wrote and recorded in the midst of the AND GOODNIGHT ~ A LULLABY ALBUM, i am reminded of moments with my babies, The Girl and The Boy.  I WILL HOLD YOU FOREVER AND EVER…oh yes.  moments in that rocking chair in the nursery, moments gently dancing to marvin gaye’s ‘i heard it through the grapevine’ in the sitting room (oddly, the only song in the early days that would quiet The Girl to sleep), moments holding hands and walking, moments of hugs of joy, of hugs of encouragement, of hugs comforting hurts, moments carrying boxes into dorm rooms, moments painfully driving away from the places they each live across the country.  it does not matter if i can wrap my arms around them.  i will – forever and ever – hold them.

this is on the lullaby album for just those reasons.  the album is a compilation of old lullaby songs all performed solo piano; it was a project of love.

but this piece of music could just as easily been on an album of love songs.  a while ago i thought about a wedding album and this would have been a track.  for as i think about the comfort of being held and holding another, the holding-on-tight-dancing-in-the-kitchen, the letting-go of everything as you embrace, the end-of-day laying down together, the wherever-you-are-there-i-will-be of love, the exquisiteness of understanding the words ‘forever and ever’, i can see where it plays a dual role.  for, yes, we hold all who we love and have loved forever and ever.

EmbracedNow

held in grace:  embraced now – mixed media  48″ x 36″

this.  this feeling.  this painting.

it took my breath away when he painted it.  it takes my breath away now.

sharing studio space with my artist husband has many benefits.  we can interrupt each other with questions or comments or what-the-heck-is-thats or sometimes tears.  i am a great interrupter.  i am from long island; interrupting is an art form there. ask crunch or sue or marc AU.

two rocking chairs in the studio means we can mutually sip coffee (or wine) together while pondering what’s next.  or brainstorm.  or discuss current politics (ugh).  or argue.  or concoct new ideas.  my C5 is upstairs in a different studio, away from paint and acrylic and gesso and scissors and my sewing-machine-induced-scraps and power tools and a sound system that is sometimes cranked up.  a melange.  welcome to DR davidrobinson thursday.

i won’t forget the day i walked downstairs and saw this painting in progress.  the raw emotion is striking and -at once- comforting.

as you head into the weekend and, maybe, your celebration of valentine’s day, i wish for you – in whatever is your own cherished relationship – this feeling. loved. encircled. embraced.  held in grace indeed.

chicken marsala monday #1

love needs no words jpeg copy 2we share studio space.  it’s a kaleidoscope of color and sound and texture punctuated by laughter and brainstorming and quiet and dancing…a melange of our work, created individually and together.

for a year we worked on syndicating our cartoon chicken marsala.  our chicken strip was sweet and funny and was met with enthusiasm by a couple of syndicates, but ultimately, was not syndicated.  however, chicken marsala lived on with us, in our lives.  full of goodness and radical kindness, he’s this little guy who is a part of us.  so we decided if not chicken strips, then how about chicken nuggets!

LOVE NEEDS NO WORDS is the first chicken nugget we share with you.  i could say a lot about the caption of this nugget, but LOVE NEEDS NO WORDS really needs no words.

welcome to our melange.  welcome to our studio.  see you tomorrow.
